Silent footage from c. April, 1945 of the US Army discovering about $2 million of stolen gold, art, and other valuables in an abandoned salt mine, Kaiseroder Mine, in Merkers, Germany.
Edouard Manet's "Im Wintergarten" is among the recognizable pieces of art. There are also a series of Albrecht Durer engravings, "Beast With Two Horns Like a Lamb," "Masquerade Dance With Torches," "Martyrdom of Saint John, from The Apocalypse," "Opening of the Fifth and Sixth Seals, from The Apocalypse," "Adoration of the Lamb, from The Apocalypse," and "Christ on the Cross between the Virgin and Saint John." There are also views of the surrounding area.
Col. Bernard Bernstein who was the donor of the film, was a financial adviser to the U.S. Army and was involved with this discovery, though he does not appear in the film.
This footage is in the public domain.
