ZERO WASTE AWARD WINNER

COMMUNITY ADVOCATE WINNER!

I won the Brady Hunter Foundation Zero Waste Miami Community Advocate Award at the Zero Waste Miami Celebration event hosted by Debris Free Oceans at Arlo Hotel. It's been a pleasure serving the community with sustainability advocacy work and education. I'm elated to be recognized for this part of my practice and hope this inspires even deeper connections with the environmentalist and zero waste communities so we can work together for a better future in solidarity.

It was so lovely being around other like-minded people at the Arlo Hotel and I am so grateful to have been recognized for my "remarkable contributions to fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship within the Miami-Dade community".

The mayor gave opening remarks, the drinks were flowing (in reusable cups), and there was an art show curated by ReCreate Miami featuring two of my banners and other upcycled works!

peter bullough.jpg

PETER BULLOUGH FOUNDATION ARTIST RESIDENCY

HEADING TO VIRGINIA FOR A MONTH TO MAKE ART

This fall marks the Peter Bullough Foundation's (PBF) third year of visiting artists. We’re quite pleased to kick off our fall season with nine artists that represent an extremely broad range of practices and backgrounds. Each will bring something unique to the Winchester community and we look forward to sharing Winchester with them.

Community practice plays a large role for two of our artists, Mary Welcome and Pangea Kali Virga, who will both be visiting in September. Welcome describes herself as a “cultural worker collaborating with remote landscapes and rural communities.” Part artist, part activist, her work explores equity and inclusivity, queerness and imagination. Social responsibility is also crucial to Kali Virga’s work as she hopes to create a more sustainable and equitable fashion and art industry. Their fiber art tells a story, weaving upcycled and refuse-sourced material to create wall hangings, installations, and site-specific garments. Both look forward to discourse with the surrounding area.

ECOTOPIA EVENT SERIES

CREATIVE DIRECTION AND PRODUCTION BY PANGEA KALI VIRGA WITH VIZCAYA MUSEUM AND GARDENS

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens continues the tradition of summer art-
making workshops with the launch of Pangea Kali Virga’s Ecotopia, an artistic space
and series of FREE workshops focused on promoting creativity, collaboration, and
sustainability. This initiative emphasizes that anyone can be an artist and that we can
all make a difference in caring for our community and the environment.
“It is all made possible through shared resources and shared effort-- and most
importantly, shared fun,” says Kali Virga, the creative mind behind the series.
“Ecotopia puts art and environment at the front of the conversation on how to
strengthen and build our communities. All are invited to come join us to build our
cooperative Utopian Town Square.”
The program is made up of eight community art events covering different disciplines,
from painting and cooking to sewing and planting, as well as a Finale Town Square
Festival. The workshops take place from July 8 through Jul 30, 2023, in the historic
garage at Vizcaya Village.
The series is designed to highlight sustainable practices, the unique ecology of South
Florida and the act of sharing with a cumulative finale -- the Utopic Town Square
Festival. The finale festival event will take place at Vizcaya Village on Sunday, August
6, 2023, from 9am to 2:00pm.

ART RESIDENCY EXHIBITION

BONES OF A STORY FEATURING MY DIPTYCH

I’ve never put so much of my heart and soul into a creation as I have into my quilt, HISTORY WILL ALWAYS FIND YOU AND WRAP YOU IN ITS THOUSAND ARMS.

This piece encapsulates my entire autobiographical past, my ancestral past, the concept of past, and so much more. It’s rich in texture and symbolism, like a visual fiber art novel of my tribulations and traumas, my triumphs and losses, my forgiveness, my closure, my faith in my past self. It’s dense and made with so much archetypal imagery it can possibly read like a story of your own making too.

Working on this quilt has been a vehicle for change, my physical labor matching my emotional labor. I do this not to forget, but to embrace.

This art work will be completed after a year (lifetime) of hard work for its grand debut at THE MOCA MUSEUM for the PROJECTART Resident Artist exhibition, Bones Of A Story on May 26.

nEWs 10
segment

Another sweet feature about my sustainable designs on the news!

I was on TV *again*! I got to talk about sustainability, my clothing designs, and the impact of fashion on the environment during the sweetest feature ever for the segment Don’t Trash Our Treasure on Local 10 News with Louis Aguirre.

They were thorough and included everything from my baby pictures, footage from my workshops, me sewing, footage from massive clothing landfills, snippets from a great conversation in my studio, facts about the amount of waste the general population creates, and so much more. A super informative segment!

This program is committed to talking about climate change with a South Florida focus and  highlights the many issues, climate advocates, and public initiatives happening in the region.  You can find my episode and others HERE to have your finger on the pulse of climate news and action in South Florida!

Portals,
an exhibition

Group Exhibition of Miami Fiber Artists

Three pieces of my original art will be on display as part of Portals, an exhibition curated by Laura Marsh in Little River as part of the city-wide exhibition Threading The City in collaboration with FAMA.

When one door closes, another opens: Pass through the gate and encounter a dialogue between artists of multiple generations who each respond to textiles and the outdoors. The outdoors provide a feeling of passage that is hand-in-hand with how fabric and textiles are produced by incorporating local plants, natural and synthetic materials, water, and humanitarian messages. Portals is on the border of El Portal, originally the capital and sacred grounds of the Tequestas, now a bird sanctuary, and Little River, named after the river that runs along its northern edge and one of Miami's arts districts. These are the two neighborhoods that the exhibition is in dialogue with. Portals is a nine-person exhibition, community initiative, and educational workshop series that is part of Threading the City, a Miami-wide celebration of the burgeoning world of textile arts organized with the Fiber Artist Association of Miami (FAMA)

Opening, Oct 21: 5-7 through Dec. 9, M-TH, 11-4, and appointment upon request

Artists Open is a county-wide open studios event that welcomes the public into over 300 artists’ studios all over Miami. The program is designed to eliminate barriers of entry into the arts by inviting the public to engage with artists in their studios, a rare opportunity to see inside their creative space and what they surround themselves with for inspiration.

I will be joining the festivities at my studio workshop in Fountainhead and will have new upcycled styles and new art on display.

bass bags portrait fountainhead studios.png

pangea kali virga x the bass musum

I had the honor of teaming up with The Bass Museum to craft these super limited edition accessories made with you and art and the earth in mind.

Each bag is cut from past exhibition banners and the tags are made from recycled seed paper, meaning each tag becomes wild flowers when you plant it! Because the totes were individually cut every bag has a completely different design on it in all kinds of patterns and colors from some of my favorite artists. It’s literally like carrying a work of art.

These sweet bags are the perfect size for toting around all your belongings for the day from your laptop to your lunch and each one is completely unique! Stop by the museum gift shop to get one today!

PRELUDE TO 2100

An immersive collaborative art experience at the Deering Estate with costume design by Pangea Kali Virga.

I had the honor of costuming the performance of Terra Firma by Sandra Portal-Andreu, with a custom garment that channels the pure essence of nature, using upcycled materials.

This event brings together more than 30 Miami artists from the theater, dance, visual arts, music, performance, and harder-to-define creative arenas. The central concept and theater performance imagines the Deering Estate in 2050 as a co-housing complex, where its residents — climate refugees from throughout the United States and the world, are hosting an open house to interview potential new members of their community.

You can read more about this event in the Miami Herald in their newly published article interviewing the event's curator Susan Caraballo.

Tickets are available HERE for performances, with staggered time slots
