THE TURN OF THE SCREW OPERA, A MULTI-MEDIA PERFORMANCE AT THE VIZCAYA MUSEUM

October 2021

Costume Design by Pangea Kali Virga

Directed by Laine Rettmer for Vizcaya Museum and IlluminArts in Miami, Florida.

Much inspiration for the Turn Of The Screw costume design came directly from the ornate details of the Vizcaya Museum Estate. You can see Vizcaya motifs such as tigers, flowers, drapery, and various patterns peppered throughout the wardrobe that reference the abundant vases, mouldings, sculptures, and other design elements of the museum.

Interpreting these characters in a contemporary light was an exciting challenge swapping blazers with track suits and studded jackets, translating girlishness into rainbow brite faux fur mini skirt sets and painted denim, and using unexpected materials like dissolvable fabric. As an artist and designer much of my work is based on sustainable practices and I took every opportunity to use upcycled materials and vintage clothing to build the Turn of The Screw wardrobe.
